Sara Louise (Stienecker) Phillips, age 88, passed away on August 5, 2025, in Lafayette,IN. Born February 18, 1937, “Louise” was named after both her grandmothers. She was the only daughter of Edgar and Cecile (MacAvoy) Stienecker and was close to her half- brother Ed Stienecker Jr. and half-sister Betty Jane Altherr and called ‘Aunt Lou’ by her nieces and nephews.
Louise spent most of her childhood growing up near Detroit, MI. Her family moved back to Indiana, and she graduated from Stilesville High School in 1954. She went to Indiana University to study elementary education, graduating in 1958. She later earned a master’s degree from Depauw University. An avid reader, she wanted to teach children the gift of reading.
She was introduced to the love of her life, Cliff Phillips, on a blind date for a New Year’s Eve party. They married on August 2 that same year and celebrated 61 years together. He preceded her in death in 2020. Their daughters, Cheri (John) Janssen and Susie (Jim) Curtis grew up on the farm at Coatesville. Over her 15-year teaching career Mrs. Phillips taught Kindergarten, first and second grades, much of that time in Amo Elementary classrooms.
Louise and Cliff shared many great times together playing golf, traveling, and enjoying winters in Florida. Louise was a loving Grammy to Michael (Sara) and Matt (Emma) Curtis; Jessica (George) Sparks and Cole (Allie) Janssen. She was blessed to be a ‘Gigi’ to two great-grandsons, Kix and Coy Sparks.
Louise moved to Five Star Residences, Lafayette, IN in 2022, where she quickly made new friends. The family is appreciative of the caring staff of Five Star.
Sara Louise was preceded in death by husband Cliff, her parents and siblings.
