Joseph Wendell Elrod was born on November 26, 1923, in Putnam County, Indiana, near Coatesville. He passed from our world on August 20, 2013, at the age of eighty-nine.
He was a graduate of Amo Indiana High School and Purdue University, where he became an electrical engineer. Following college, he served two years in the United States Navy during World War II.
Joe worked for Penn Power Company before coming to Mansfield in 1957. He then was employed at the Ohio Brass Company. After thirty years of service with The Ohio Brass, he retired in 1987. He was a member of S.C.O.R.E., a life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE,) and a 50 year Mason.
Joe enjoyed working in his workshop and in his yard. He was an avid reader and loved to travel. In his earlier days, Joe served on the board of the Mansfield Playhouse and also enjoyed golfing.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Wendell B. and Ruth Bourne Elrod, and also by his only sibling, his brother, Dr. James Elrod, of Greencastle Indiana. Joe will be returned to rest with his family in the Stilesville Cemetery near Greencastle.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, October 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Stilesville Cemetery. Services will be handled by Bousley-Hays Funeral Home.
